I hope everyone is safe and hopefully as dry as possible in the aftermath of these awful floods. I've finally gotten around to updating the lists, now that indoor dining and trivia nights are a lot more normalized. I haven't started going out to them yet, but we probably will head to one fairly soon. In this latest update

added 12 Kings

subtracted the Firefighters

Think Again Trivia is off, because I can't find any information on them online! I'm sure everyone has their own opinions on whether it is a great idea to spend upwards of two hours in a bar or restaurant and trust to them to have your health and hygiene in mind. I myself am probably not going to be going to a restaurant anytime soon. That said, a number of quizzes are running again! Here's a few of the ones that I know of.

Nice Guys Trivia is running trivia at the Lamplighter, Tuesdays at 7.

IQ2000 is running trivia out of (at least) Colony Granville, Wednesday at 8.

Vancouver Trivia Party is running several in the suburbs, and at Hastings Mill Tuesdays at 6:30

Quizzing With Carin is back at the Junction and Princeton, Mondays and Wednesdays

I'm sure there are others out there too, but I haven't seen them. IQ2000 is running a weekly online quiz on twitch, and Think Again Trivia (aka Hail Mary's) is doing theirs live once a month, on the last Thursday. Also, if quizzing from home is more your style, this google doc collects them from all around the world. Stay safe!
I hope that you and yours are all healthy and safe. A lot of people are probably pretty bored right now, so I thought I'd post some options for online quizzes by Vancouver trivia hosts. It's a bit of a different vibe, but at least you're still getting questions asked of you. Without further ado:

IQ2000 runs two quizzes a week on Twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/iq2k/. Monday and Wednesday at 8. They are attracting a humungous number of teams, so it is a good place to flex your mettle. Answers are submitted via a google form.

Vancouver Trivia Party posts quizzes online here - https://www.vancouvertriviaparty.com/this-week-s-free-quiz. They also host live quizzes on their facebook page, but I'm not sure of the cadence.

Think Again Trivia (of Hail Mary's) continues their monthly trivia night using Zoom, details found on their instagram.

The Big Fat Query (of The Fountainhead) posts sets of questions and answers every Sunday evening, on their facebook page. It's mostly for fun, not so much for competition.

As always, shout out if you know of more!

In one year? What have you done to deserve this, you might ask. Fear not, for I will fill you in presently.

I'd like to begin by saying sorry for letting The Master List get so stagnant. I've made some attempts to correct that, and all the Vancouver proper quizzes are up to date. Gone are the quizzes long cancelled, and the bars long closed. One of them, Displace Hashery, had a new restaurant open AND close in the space in the intervening time. Yeesh. I've done my best to confirm that these bars still have quizzes, and that the times are up to date. Some bars - namely Koerner's, Red Racer Taphouse, and the Bottleneck - I could not confirm that there was a quiz there one way or another. There was one, but their social media and events pages no longer mention it, so I scrubbed them from the list. I also took off any of the music bingo nights from the list. I can't imagine that many people come here for that.

So then, why now? Simply put, I've been hearing a lot of quiz companies advertise they are the "best trivia night in town" or some such similar thing. Hearing this I thought, "I wonder if this brag is right?" So I've been thinking about what makes a quiz a good quiz and what, truly, is the best quiz night in town. In 2020 I'm hoping to attend the various quizzes and see what they do well, and what they do poorly, and see if I can come to some conclusions. If this project ends up making any sense at all, I'll post my findings here.

Also, I might update the way the reviews are presented on the Master List. By my count there are 51 different regular quiz nights in town, and around 14 different hosts / companies. I'm not sure a different review for each of the bars that run the same show really make all that much sense, so maybe a change is in order. The old reviews are almost all pretty stale, anyways.

Anyways, that's what's up! Enjoy the end of the year, everyone!Vancouver Pub Quizzeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08638763661728496358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178856257842217986.post-5986193144778158312019-04-06T13:20:00.002-07:002019-04-06T13:22:17.922-07:00Aunt Leah's Charity QuizThough the Master List has been kept up to date, it's been awhile since I've posted here! Time to burst out of that slumber with a little bit of quiz news, driven by a good cause! Aunt Leah's Place is running their 8th Annual Trivia and Silent Auction, with all funds being used to support youth from foster care and moms at risk of losing custody of their children. It's Saturday, April 27th, with doors at 7:00. Teams of 6-8 people, tickets are $35 per person. The event is being held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Centre at Ash and 15th. More information can be found on their website, or on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/2501367563239930/Vancouver Pub Quizzeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08638763661728496358noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178856257842217986.post-81360999606058074432018-03-20T20:53:00.000-07:002018-03-20T21:24:41.669-07:00The Milltown Bar & GrillWhere: The Milltown Bar & Grill - 9191 Bentley Street

When: 8:30, Thursdays

Web Presence: Clues and hints for the upcoming week can be found on their facebook page.

Team Info: Up to six people. Got more? Split into two teams!

Prizes: There's a 40 dollar gift certificate (redeemable future weeks only, alas), with a random prize for second-to-last place as well. Copious amounts of shots to be won in-between the rounds on bonus questions as well.

Format: Four rounds, twelve questions. Questions can be worth any number of points. There's also arbitrary enthusiasm points to be won as well.

Food and Drink: Good burgers, and tasty pizza to be had. The menu is pretty extensive, so chances are good you'll find something to eat. It's burger night on Thursdays, which means carnivores get a pretty sweet deal on a burger and a beer. Pretty straightforward beer selection, but $5.25 Pale Ales and $6 boozy Arnold Palmers are a good game day specials.

The Milltown Bar and Grill is one of the few quizzes in Vancouver that is located on an island. I'm trying to rack my brains to think if there is one on Granville Island, but I'm not sure there is - so I guess that we can safely say that this is the only trivia night you'll find on an island. It is also the only quiz in Vancouver that is in Richmond.

Wait, what? The Milltown is on Richmond Island, a tiny island just North of Vancouver International Airport, and only accessible through Marpole. De jure Richmond, de facto Vancouver. It has great views of the flightpath, and if you happen to have a boat, you'll have few problems docking at the nearby marina. I assume. I don't have a boat. For such a far-flung locale, the bar is cozy, warm, and quite full. Most of the tables were playing trivia, so it is safe to say the community here is doing quite well. The food is good, and the staff are super friendly.

But, how's the quiz? I imagine that is why you are here. In a Vancouver where quiz companies are extending their reach across multiple bars, it is refreshing to find a new quiz that has a personal touch, and isn't another franchise of a larger concern. It's four rounds of homespun questions, with plenty of sports, and plenty of multiple point questions. There's a fair share of true or false, and the tried and true maxim of "pick whichever answer seems less likely" held up pretty well here. Is 90 mile beach actually 90 miles? Of course not! There was a fair number of difficult questions (the Welsh name of the official residence of the Prime Minister?), but mixed in a few softballs that could be answered by looking at one of the many televisions (Who was playing in the Thursday Night Football game).

In a rarity for quizzes about town, there was no music round. However, if you're an extroverted type, there were ample opportunities to get bonus points by going up and singing a song during our theme round on Pop Princesses. Whether or not you got any points, and how many you got, appeared fairly arbitrary, but that's how it goes sometimes. The theme round, I might add, is nominated and voted on by quizzers the previous week, which I think is a pretty cool idea. The "vote via hooting and hollering" is something I find a bit tiresome, especially as the night stretches on, but the crowd digs it here. There was also a "Win Two Shots" minigame at the end of each round - the quizmaster would load up imdb and read out movies until one of the gathered people submitted the actor that had a role in all of them. Ties are broken in a fun manner - one representative from each team goes up, and goes had to head trying to name more of something (the five largest buildings in Vancouver, the elements that start with the letter 'A'), which I think is a great tiebreak.

It was a fun night, though a late 8:30 start can make getting back a little tricky if you don't live in South Granville, or drive. There is a shuttle service available for patrons who have four or more drinks, but we didn't quite reach the cutoff there. Fortunately, airport proximity mean cabs are easy to come by. It's certainly a quiz I will come back to, but likely in the summer, when the walk down the causeway to the bar is warmer, and I can watch some planes landing.

Coming in for landing: A bit tricky to get to, but a fun quiz in a cozy atmosphere.
Anyways! I've got some quiz news for you, recounted here in roughly the order it came to me.

Once again, the Friends of the Terry Fox Library are hosting another literary quiz night. It's on Saturday, April 8th, at the Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam. Tickets are 20 bucks apiece.

There's a quiz at the Dubh Linh Gate on Main Street on Wednesdays now. Cool! Starts at 7.

Debbie, aka the Quizmistress, has moved her quiz at the Fringe to Tuesday Nights, and is starting up a new quiz on Monday's at Red Card, located in the Moda Hotel downtown. It's the same lucky key trivia she has always run, with a $50 gift certificate going to the winners. Should be fun!

Sadly, Darby's will be changing hosts yet again, and swapping the ever popular Carin for the quiz stylings of the IQ 2000 quiz company. Hopefully Carin pops up again at a new location. I'll keep you posted! Quiz at Darby's will change format, but should still be the same time.

Speaking of IQ 2000, they are making their first attempt at a grand trivia even in the style of Geek Bowl, with "The BIGGEST trivia event in history" [citation needed]. IQ Mania will be on Saturday July 8th at the Biltmore Cabaret, and tickets are about 20 bucks a person after ticketfly takes their cut. Teams are of 7 people, and top prize is rumored to be around 500 dollars. I'd make sure to get your tickets early. I've got mine!
Looks like quiz is up and running again at The Park, which is welcome news for any quizzers in the West End. Look for more updates and reviews in the next couple of months!Vancouver Pub Quizzeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08638763661728496358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178856257842217986.post-29358689559927368692016-11-20T19:45:00.002-08:002016-11-20T19:45:55.432-08:00The Circle of LifeI come today as the bearer of some sad news, but to counteract, I've brought double the glad news. I hope that'll work.

The sad is that there's one fewer quiz in the city: The Pressbox is no longer running their quiz. Too bad.

The glad is that there's two new ones to announce! Falconetti's has brought back their Wednesday quiz, albeit with different hosts. As with some other quizzes in town, they look to be locking into a league play format, and according to their website are offering one thousand dollars to the top placing team. That's some pretty good coin right there. The second is a bit further afield, but will probably scratch your itch if you finding yourself missing the Pressbox. The Narrows in North Vancouver is now running quizzes Wednesday at 8, for those of you North of the Ironworker's.

Enjoy!

In any case, this is to let you that no, the blog isn't dead, and yes, The Master List is up to date. Please let me know if you have any news!

To show you how it works, I'll even supply with some tidbits of my own: pub quiz has returned to everyone in Vancouver's favourite antipodean hideout, The ANZA Club! This time around, it is on the last Sunday of every month, and will be run by Quiz juggernaut IQ2000. I hope to see you there.

Speaking of Mount Pleasant, Woo Hoo! Classics Simpsons Trivia will be migrating to the Biltmore Cabaret, effective October 24th. Ha... ho?Vancouver Pub Quizzeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08638763661728496358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178856257842217986.post-80964295125007328392016-05-08T14:06:00.000-07:002016-05-08T14:07:03.677-07:00Triune Impurity RitesIt's been awhile since I've updated this, and we've got some news from three corners of the city. I hope this enables a broad swath of the city to drink and answer some questions.

First off, the good people of Marpole have a quiz to call their own, as the Milltown Bar & Grill have started a trivia night on Thursdays. head on down, for four rounds of trivia, for a shot to win over 60 dollars in prizes. I'm told Thursday is Fish and Chips night, so that's an added bonus. They also run Music Trivia every second Saturday, providing the opportunity to go to a quiz for thirteen consecutive days (!).

Our next port of call will take us to Commercial Drive, where Stateside Craft is running some Thursday Night Trivia. It looks like you can grab a $12 pitcher of beer on Thursdays, so that should be reason enough to go. Don't know much else about it, though.

And finally, to round out this holy trinity of Thursday quizzes - it looks as though the excellent quiz at the Our Town Cafe (the one at Kingsway and Broadway) is back on, after a long hiatus. I haven't stopped back in, but last I went, it was a fantastic quiz. No word on whether Def Jeoppard is back providing musical accompaniment.

I'll try to head out to these quizzes to give everyone an update as soon as I can. It'll take at least three weeks, but more likely four or five. Or six. Or ten.

When: 8 PM Wednesdays

Web Presence: You can follow Quizmaster Rebecca on twitter, @trebekaquiz

Team Info: Bring 'em if you got em? I didn't see any specific team size limit.

Prizes: Random prizes throughout the night, and a round of drinks for the first place squad

Format: Two or three rounds, each with three categories of ten questions

Food and Drink: The very definition of pub food, without any aspirations toward craft, or local chic. Plain, straight food that will fill you up. As a result of being located in one of Vancouver's craft beer hotspots, the beer selection is quite good.

When Alexander died, the Wars of the Diadochi flared up as Perdiccas, Antipater, Ptolemy and others carved out their own satrapies from the continent-spanning empire. When Katie (of Quiz Night With Katie fame) finally shed the Vancouver coil, the aftermath was a lot less bloody across her three quiz nights. While no quiz has ever been able to take root in the arid soil of the Portside, grounds were more fertile in the East. As Ptolemy founded his dynasty in Egypt, so too has Trebeka built her own Lagidae at the Princeton Pub & Grill, located at the corner of Powell and Victoria streets.

If you're still reading this after all that needless masturbatory exposition: thanks! Now I'll tell you what you want to know. Starting at 8 PM, despite what the website and posters say, Trebeka's quiz is a well constructed quiz, with a light but competitive crowd. There were about six teams when we were there, and room for a few more. The questions are grouped into themed rounds, which I love. Instead of two rounds of General Knowledge and some picture rounds, each week you are going to be quizzed on something more specialized. I'm a fan of this style as it lets all sorts of people join in on the question answering, and rewards the most versatile teams. Our table d'hôte served up a round on Tiling, grout and all, and a round on Mali. Given the railroad-adjacent locale, it was clarified that round would be about the country, and not the drug.

The food is fine, and the beer options varied. The service can be a bit slow, but have some pity on the one poor bartender they have trying to keep everything straight. It is a bit out of the way if you live downtown or west of Main, but if you're in the erstwhile Hastings-Sunrise or really anywhere else in East Van, it's an excellent choice. So go! A quiz like this deserves more teams.

Too Long? Didn't Read?: A strong quiz in a slightly far-flung locale. I'm definitely going back.

Prizes: Various cool prizes to be won. Free beers for successful and loud teams, augmented by local prizes ranging from salsa to piercings.

Format: Four rounds of about ten questions

Food and Drink: I seem to recall standard upscale pub food that fancies itself better than it actually was. You'll find something for everyone on the beer list, from affordably priced domestics to local craft offerings.

I'm kind of cheating here, doing two reviews at once. I think that every bar should be given a fair shake, even when the quizzes are run by the same folk. That said: These quizzes are pretty much the same, from the stylish host to the Donnelly-lite decor of the gastropubs that contain them. I thought for quite some time on how I could write a substantively different review for each experience, and, through my own faults as a writer, came up empty-handed. The differences boil down as follows: There's slightly different flavouring in the prizes, and the Main Street event traditionally attracts more teams. Also, there's no big screen at the Kits location to support IQ 2000's fantastic visual presentation.

To be honest, though you might actually think I'm getting two reviews for the price of one, the truth is, I'm getting two for the price of none. We're big fans of IQ 2000 at Vancouver Pub Quiz, as you probably noticed. Since we've reviewed his quiz so many times, we will point to in the direction of our review for the erstwhile Mr. Brownstone, now the location of Colony Main. Take that description, drop it into the slick confines of a Blueprint Group property1, and there you have it.

TWICE AS NICE: It's an IQ 2000 quiz: lots of hooting, hollering, good questions, and an excellent presentation. If I had to choose between the two, I'd say the Main Street location is the better of the two, mostly due to its superior attendance, competition, and features the visual show as well.
Fans of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, and more have all had the chance to flex their brains and demonstrate their in-universe superiority. For whatever reason, this list doesn't even mention the monthly nostalgia overdose that is Simpsons trivia. Whatever your opinion on these quizzes are, we've got two more coming down the pipe. Fans of giving the executives at the Walt Disney Corporation and 21st Century Fox money, rejoice! Quizzes on Star Wars and Archer are on their way in the next two weeks!

This time, I'm going to let the pictures do the talking, since they're all the information I have anyways. Cheers!
Web Presence: Nope!
Team Info: Most teams seemed to be of about four or five people, but I don't know if there is a limit or not.

Format: A complete gong show, in the best possible way. See the body of the review.

Food and Drink: Cheap drinks, as is the style at veteran's clubs around the country. Microwave popcorn available. Cash only.

It is kind of hard to explain Trivia Night with the Riddler in any meaningful capacity. I've only been once, and it is my understanding the quiz has a very amorphic structure. As such, I can only tell you what I saw, and how I felt about it. Spoiler warning: I had a fucking blast.

The Army, Navy, and Airforce Veterans Unit Taurus #298, as it is properly called (and henceforth shortened to ANA, not to be confused with the airline I just flew home on), is located in a whitesided building at 23rd and Main in the heart of Mount Pleasant. You may have been their for one of their excellent and lively karaoke nights, or their pinball machines, or just for some shuffleboard. The crowd it draws in is different from most places, packing in a lively crowd of veterans and old regulars. You'll find some stray skinny jeaned hipsters mixed in there as well, as befits the locale, but on average the crowd here skews about a generation and half older than most pub quizzes. The beer is fine, and priced very kindly. It is a members only club, so you'll need to sign in at the bar and abide by their rules, which includes doffing any cap you happen to be wearing.

I consider myself more or less a traditionalist when it comes to doing pub quizzes: I like having questions asked of me, for a certain number of points, which are then tallied up, and the team with the most of said points being declared the victors. Trivia Night with the Riddler doesn't play by those rules, really. I mean, there are teams. There is head to head competition, and prizes are involved. The questions are knowledge based. There are scores. But the similarity more or less ends there, as the Riddler gleefully deconstructs the notion of how you can have fun answering questions at a drinking establishment.

The quiz was broken up into five or six rounds, depending on how you're keeping track. It starts with some toss up questions, where the first person to shout out the answer gets two bucks in cold, hard, polar bear adorned cash. This was followed by a "match the company to the slogan round," for which points were doled out. These points were then wagered in the next round, Final Jeopardy! style, where each team got their own personalized question, while the rest of the bar spectated. The top score after two rounds of what are essentially double or nothing questions won the first half prize: money, both legal tender and the aformentioned Riddler Bucks.

The intermission saw us treated to feats of magic and prestidigitation, to set the stage for the second half. The second half was similar to the first, with another toss up round, but this one featuring audience authored questions <span style="background-color: #fcfaf3; color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19.5px;">— stump the crowd and the toonie is yours. This was followed by a "Guess the Snack Price" round, and then the "Brain Twister" round, which was pretty much standard trivia. Closest to the snack price wins the snacks, and top score wins the cash. After all was said and done, a small auction was held where you could use any Riddler Bucks your team had accumulated to wager on a small supply of prizes, which consisted of varied Canadiana. Think ANA articles of clothing, box sets of Corner Gas, and the like.

Riddle Me This: An unbridled delight. If you are sitting around on a lazy Sunday jonesing for some unorthodox trivia, this is the place to be.
In honor of Halloween (I suppose), here are two chances to dress up and get quizzing!

First, on Wednesday October 28th, You Know Nothing - Games Of Thrones Trivia Night is being hosted by local host Lucas Meneses-Skoda at Venue Nightclub. Teams of up to 8 people, tickets $10 each. The grand prize is a frankly impressive $500, so bring your best Valyrian Steel trap minds. It appears to be primarily based on the HBO show, and less on the George R. R. Martin Book. Doors at 6, quizzin' at 7. Buy your tickets here.

If you're not tired out by that, The Manchester Public Eatery in Kits is hosting Harry Potter Trivia the very next night, starting at 7:30. Not as much information on this one, but tickets are $5 each, and teams can have up to seven aspiring wizards on them. Buy tickets here, although there will be some available at the door if you prefer to live on the edge.

Team Info: Not entirely certain, but I'd wager that you can bring as many as you like, per other quizzes at Donnelly pubs.

Prizes: Top three teams win a pitcher of beer, along with other prizes. Also a few games of "Heads Or Tails" could win you supplementary drinks.

Format: The standard 8 round Nice Guys quiz you'll see at Donnelly pubs across the city. A photo round to warm up, and a heavy emphasis on music. Be prepared for an "In the news" round, coming from that liner of composts across the city, The Province.

Food and Drink: I found the food to be pretty pub-standard, but I was very impressed by the beer selection. I mean, nobody will confuse it for the Alibi Room or 12 Kings, but the selection is vast, with a lot of good craft choices.

Here we are again, at another quiz in a Donnelly pub run by the kind fellows at Nice Guys Trivia. I had a pretty good idea of what to expect, but let's recap for those at the back. Here you'll find lots of pop culture questions, with almost half the points coming from music and current events. The quizmasters are fairly brisk about proceedings, moving along at a much faster pace than I had previously experienced with Nice Guys. If there is one thing I really don't like about quizzes, it is when the hosts artificially drag things on. I understand that the quiz is here to get us to buy food and drinks and otherwise patronise a place we maybe wouldn't, but I can't stand it when places are downright shameless about it. Anyways, not a problem this time around. Perhaps someone reads my occasional bitching? A nice thought.

No, my son is also named
the Lamplighter

The tenor of the questions seemed quite similar to what I've seen at The Bimini, the former Calling, and other similar pubs, so I think it is a very safe bet to say most quizzes are a long the same lines here. Nothing unusually dumb, but also nothing overly difficult. A good sense of standard quiz knowledge, acronyms, and picking the least-likely sounding multiple choice question will take you a long way here.

The bar's a big one, so chances that you'll find a seat. The Lamplighter's website claims that it is "The biggest pub quiz night in Vancouver," although I dispute that particular claim. They definitely have a large and busy space, but based on the number of teams I've seen there, I don't think it is the biggest by a long shot. Even though it isn't packed to the rafters with teams, there is still a good number of regular teams that show up to do battle every week, which is the sign of a healthy quiz. They mostly seemed nice, and were gracious in defeat.

Deb, aka the Quismistress is taking lucky key trivia to The Brighton Pub, in Hastings-Sunrise. Wednesday nights at 8 PM, with a $40 bar tab on the line. Great to see a quiz pop up in that neighbourhood.

IQ2000 is spreading to the suburbs, running a quiz on Thursday nights at Townhall public House in Coquitlum. The festivities start August 13th.

The quiz at Darby's continues under the watchful eye of Carin, every Thursday night

Decoda Literacy is hosting their second annual Literacy Team Trivia Challenge, this time at Red Card Sports Bar. It was good fun last time around, and if you want a crack at the oversize trophy, well... *cracks knuckles, blows dust off fingernails* you'll have to come through me to get it. Come on down, and support a good cause while answering some questions.

Katie had been a mainstay of the Vancouver quiz scene for the last five years, running over 200 quizzes from her base at Fourth and MacDonald in Kits. I would take in Katie's quizzes frequently, and it was always a great time. She had an excellent sense of topic and knew her crowd well. The quiz at Darby's was a tightly-run ship, with well-researched questions, practised delivery, and impeccable promptness. There's no wondering why Quiz night at Darby's had such a large and dedicated following, and easily the best competition of any quiz night in town.

So, thanks for all the great quizzes, Katie! It was truly a pleasure. I hope that you inspire some bored young person to start Prince Rupert Pub Quiz dot com.
I Die! I Quiz Again!Friends an enemies of pub quiz, I've got some news on the ins and outs of pub quiz in Vancouver.

IN: Harry Potter Quiz is returning to The Sunset Grill on Wednesday, June 24th. At 7:30 PM, come on down and take your O.W.L.s and your N.E.W.T.s, and have a lot of fun answering questions about the world's favourite teen wizarding sensation. I can't back that last statement up with fact, but take my word for it. Tickets can be purchased here. The last event sold out, so get on it before it is too late.

OUT: After several years of quizzing patrons on Commercial Drive, the trivia night at Falconetti's has shut its proverbial doors. I'll miss it, but the gentlemen from Smarty Pints Trivia continue at The Five Point, where you'll find them every Wednesday evening.

IN: My, IQ 2000 is keeping busy. On top of their weekly quizzes at the Kings Head and the two Colonies (Main and Kitsilano), there is a truly staggering array of niche quizzes hosted at the Biltmore Cabaret. If Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings wasn't your thing, then perhaps mid-90s and early 2000s television is more up your alley. You'll find IQ 2000-hosted quizzes on Seinfeld, Friends, and The OC, all in the next month. Goodness.

Beer Trivia on Saturday, May 30th, from 2-6 PM as part of Vancouver Craft Beer Week. The event will be hosted by IQ 2000 Trivia, and entry comes with rounds of craft beer to taste, as well as appetizers for the team.

Why am I mentioning this now? I already said it was sold out. Even if you had the sixty dollar entry fee, you wouldn't be able to get a ticket. Am I just rubbing it in your face? Of course not! The kind folks running the show have provided me with a table to give away to one lucky reader. So here's what we're going to do. If you want to go (and trust me, you do), send me an email at vancouverpubquiz@gmail.com letting me know what your favourite craft beer is, and I'll pick a winner, and you'll have a chance to get day drunk and answer some trivia questions.

I realise it would be more germane for a quiz blog to ask you a quiz question for a contest, so I'll make this a bit more interesting. I'll give priority to whoever gets this question right: In what local district municipality will you find the main brewery for Four Winds Brewing?

Once again, send your answers to vancouverpubquiz@gmail.com to get yourself and some friends a spot at Vancouver's first craft beer quiz.

Yet again, the quizmasters at the Portside have changed. Now Mondays will find it being hosted by IQ2000 trivia, with the exact host unconfirmed at press time.

Web Presence: Quizmaster Katie usually provides some hints on her Facebook page

Team Info: Max team size of seven, so if you have more, get ready to break them down into two teams

Prizes: $60 in bar credit for first place, $40 for second, and there's even a prize for team who finished second to last.

Format: Two halves, with three ten-question categories each. There was a lightning round that gave beer to the winners as well, which is a fun diversion.

Food and Drink: Much the same as before, but the beer selection seems to have grown in their variety. If you've got a sweet tooth, they've got a tasty ice cream sandwich, made with ice cream from the impeccable Earnest Ice Cream.

Alright! You may recall that I recently did a review of the Smartside Trivia at the Portside, but forget about that! It's old news! The Portside has revamped their quiz by tipping the fantastic Katie, of Darby's notoriety, to host the show. As you may have expected given her previous body of work, it was a smart choice.

The linear quarters of the Portside haven't changed much in the last six weeks, but the trivia sure has. The quiz starts around 7:30 PM, and moves along at a decent speed. The content is classic: heavy on the pop culture, themed rounds, with a willingness to ask some legitimately tough questions. There's an enjoyable music round, some matching, and even a few new twists to Katie's formula. The lightning round between halves is a great way to hand out some free beer. Identifying random things as fast as you can is a better beer dispersal mechanism than heads or tails anyways. I suppose you shouldn't complain about free beer, but I don't see why I can't rank my preferred methods of handing it out.

As a relatively young quiz, the Portside doesn't yet have the crowds of regulars that some quizzes have. The night we were there had about seven to eight other teams, and a few tables that weren't participating. Personally, I find it interesting to see a quizmaster who is used to packed houses and rapt attentions hosting at a smaller level. Katie does a great job engaging the teams, and it looked as though even the teams who hadn't come out explicitly for quiz were having fun. Gastown is in need of more pub quizzes, and Monday has always been one of my favourite nights to go to a quiz. The week's just started, but there's still a reason to look forward to Mondays. Forget what some cats may say, if they even exist. Anyways, hopefully the word gets out that there's good times and great prizes to be had here, and the ranks of quizzers will swell.
